The Sabres snapped a four-game losing streak when they hosted the Maple Leafs.

The Blueshirts are looking to deal a defenceman, but not just any defenceman; the Blue Jackets keep hunting for a scoring centre while the Coyotes have pulled one of theirs off the block, for now. AROUND THE RINKS
- The Columbus Post-Dispatch reports that the the Blue Jackets are interested in acquiring a big scoring centre, though GM Doug MacLean acknowledges that's not going to be easy to come by. For the time being, Manny Malhotra is the club's number one centre. Yes, Manny Malhotra. TSN's Bob McKenzie even discussed the possibility that Maple Leafs C Jason Allison could be available.
- The Arizona Republic reports that the Blackhawks and Hurricanes both inquired about Coyotes C Mike Comrie after he was a healthy scratch recently, but the Coyotes are holding off on any deals for him.
- Tom Poti, having spent time in coach Tom Renney's doghouse already, is on the block in New York, reports the New York Post. St. Louis and Columbus were mentioned, though neither with much optimism, as potential destinations.
- Edmonton made a worthwhile claim on C Krys Kolanos, who was recently waived by the Coyotes. With three points and a plus-2 rating through nine games, the 6-foot-3 pivot, who was a first-rounder in 2000, has the raw ability that might be intriguing in a situation where he could get more playing time.

Team Canada Debate for Turin Olympic Games

Who's in, who's out?
Team Canada roster debate heats upTurin squad could have fresh faces
Nov. 10, 2005. 05:16 AM
DAMIEN COX

There was 1998, the year Team Canada didn't want Mark Messier.
Then there was 2002, when the Salt Lake City mission didn't include Joe Thornton.
Both were national hockey controversies and both are likely to pale in comparison to the intense debate that is already growing across the country over membership on Canada's 2006 Winter Olympic squad.
Little seems settled with six weeks left before the Canadian roster must be announced.
For example, look at the three players who were, for a variety of reasons, guaranteed positions on the squad.
Mario Lemieux, at least, has started to pick up his game of late. But he declined to attend the August orientation camp in Kelowna, B.C., and there are many wondering if this is the year Lemieux politely steps aside.
Don't forget, there was bitter criticism in Pittsburgh in '02 when Lemieux played for Canada, then returned to the Penguins for only a handful of post-Olympic matches before packing it in for the season.
Steve Yzerman, on the other hand, has accomplished little this season aside from working himself back from a serious eye injury and then fighting off a groin problem to return to the Detroit lineup seven games ago.
Yzerman notched his first goal of the year last night to go along with three assists.
Even Stevie Y would tell you these are not Olympic numbers.

HockeyBloggerman's Rant on the Leafs

HockeyBloggerman's Rant:

The leafs need to wake up and smell the coffee! Defensively, they SUCK!If they play Ottawa in the playoffs this year in the first round - the leafshave no hope in hell to make it past round 1, against any team. That is of course they do not make some fundamental changes.
Number one - fix the defence. McCabe, Kaberle are locks at number 1 and 2. The other spots are average at best. Kronwall has looked good, nothing fancy in his game.Carlo looked good too scoring his first NHL goal the other night. I don't understand why they can't have him playing on a nightly basis. Khavanov, will not be moved, since he is JFJ's pick from St. Louis. That leaves Berg. Its unfortunate since he gets the blame every night while Belak - worthless as he is, is considered a tough in your face canadian hockey player. Go figure eh?

Belak - How does a guy like him fit in today's new NHL. He doesn't win fights, he can't play defence, whenever he does, he gets a penalty. And he can't play forward because he has no skills. He should NOT have roster spot on this team, when guys like Colliacovo who is a young player ready to play has to shuffled in and out of the lineup to save cap money. What a joke.

Antropov - Sorry to say, but I thought he would finally break through this year. I think he needs a changeof scene....Ponikarovsky has passed hime, and that's not saying much. Maybe if he goes to a young rebuilding team, he can get a chance to play more, with less pressure from media and us crazy Leafs fans.

Ponikarovsky - just a faster harder working Nik Antropov. Maybe he can stick around...

Berg - unfortunately, in order to make a better defensive unit, he has to go, make room for Colliacovo now, and a possible acquisition through a trade.

Czerkawski - BUST! Try sending him to the minors, if he is picked up, congratulations. If not, who cares, you'r already wasting 500K/year on him.

Allison - I think he has done a good job, but if the leafs can move him, they should. The # 1 and # 2 guys should be Sundin and Lindros, With young centreslike Steen, Stajan, and Wellwood playing more. Maybe he can be a part of a package that can fetch a defensive defenceman, or a puck moving one to replace Belak and Berg

Guys I would like the leafs to use more are Wilm, and if they can call up Battaglia from the Marlies.

Latest Rumors

Niinimaa of NYI may be on the trade block after being sent off the ice during practice. Read the article here... http://www.newsday.com/sports/hockey/islanders/ny-spisles1108,0,2389508.story?coll=ny-sports-headlines

Jason Allisson of the Leafs, may be on the block as he does not seem to be happy with his ice time. After over 2 years of not playing hockey, he is having trouble adjusting to not being the number one centre as he was in LA, Bos, and Was.

After being a healthy scratch twice already this season, NYR defenceman Tom Poti looks like he is going to be moved along with hi $2.56 per year salary.

Washington has 2 players that will most likely be moved closer to the trade deadline. They are goalie Olaf Kolzig, who has been admirable playing for the rebuilding Capitals. The other may be moved soon, and that is defenceman Brendan Witt. The word is GM McPhee is looking for a lot in terms of prospects for the big D-man.
